It’s not been too different for me during this period of lockdown – as an independent surface pattern designer I work pretty remotely and mainly on the end of a p.c. I create time to make my handmade books because it helps me to step away from this obsessive need to create further artwork for uploading to print on demand sites such as Society6 and Redbubble. I have been so grateful for that opportunity to produce work that gets printed and displayed in homes worldwide – always a thrilling reflection. The past year has led me to want to supply to UK outlets too – most of my design work is bought in USA, and it would be lovely to feel they were enjoyed closer to home too. So besides having some of my prints now available locally in a lovely heritage centre – Beeston Canalside – I am working to get a piece of the action at Wraptious who support UK artists to get products made and sold around and about. They have a summer competition which I entered – five of my artworks are available there on cushions and prints, and if I get enough points , I may get invited to be on their books! Everyone loves a trier! You can vote via facebook, or you can share via pinterest etc, and if you are really impressed, you can make a purchase whereby I get 100 points!!

It’s not been my only endeavour – I am looking to upload some work to Spoonflower too – just sampling there at the moment, so it may not be long before I can offer fabric to my customers too. The power of modern technology never ceases to amaze me!

Would you be inclined to pop across to my page at Wraptious and lend a helping hand to my efforts there? Sharing on your facebook page would be great, or to pinterest. Well anyway you like really – I am so grateful for any support!

I am enjoying a late summer break in our beautiful Cornwall – and it is not disappointing!I find it very hard not to be ‘doing’ , so once we are back from a short trek with the reluctant Reggie, who finds everything slightly anxiety inducing, I find myself at the p.c transforming the photographs into prints and images for decor . Can’t help it . It’s almost obsessive , but there are worst things in life. I have produced these images for the blog – they are lower resolution than those produced for the sites that will sell my artwork – just to avoid plagiarism!

Let me know if any spark your interest – if you are UK based and want an image producing here, then contact me and I can do that!

How we spend our days

This little collection is taken from the pages I have at Society6 – this is where I spend my days.  I have discovered that I have aphantasia – a brain wiring which excludes visual memory. This explains why I love to spend my time making picutres – my mind is otherwise blank! It means I can’t see pictures of my family in my head – or remember places visually – and that spills over to me not really remembering past very well. I live very much in the present. I didn’t know my wiring had a name until recently – but the knowledge sort of helps explain some of my idiosynchronicity. Welcome to my world!

It’s an exciting time for us folks who slog away at surface design and upload to printon demand sites – it seems this is a fast growing marketplace where consumers are reacting very positively to seeing products with designs a little quirky – a little removed from the mall marketplace.  I have been working at design for a few years now, and seeing the product range grow and grow , particularly at Society6 where I seem to have my most success at selling.  When they add a new product to the range it always has an impact – the first being aggravation as an artist since the site struggles to accomodate the technical changes and we get multiple glitches on trying to upload our work – which impacts on sales. The second impact is somewhat more positive – i am driven to re examine my back catalogue in order that I can accommodate the new products – work is required to make the designs fit.  I like that discipline – to go back and reassess what I want to create as a new product and what I will dismiss. It has put a spring in my step, so thank you Society6!  I will show you a couple of pics to whet your appetite!  If there is a design on my site that I haven’t uploaded to wallpaper and you would like me to , please let me know.

Time for reflection… then moving on.

Art, home, illustration, print on demand sites

Just to recap over the past year – and remind everyone what I do as the day job! Working from home is often considered as not working at all. Having worked in industry during the eighties and nineties, then being a stay at home mum I can definitely tell you that choosing to create a business from a hobby is not the walk in the park many may think.  Working daily at creating new designs is great fun…. and time consuming work.  It’s not comparable to a shift at the coal face on a daily basis, but believe me, I put the hours in!  For the past few years I have been building a profile at print on demand sites, mainly Society6 and have seen lots of changes -new products, new algorithms (?) and lots and lots of new players.  It is increasingly difficult to be seen on a print on demand site, but perseverance pays and last year was my most successful there yet. Below are a few of the designs that made my best sellers. There’s no rhyme or reason for what sells and what lies unheeded. I am just delighted that some of my work is being enjoyed all over the globe!

2018 will see more of my eclectic design – inspired by nature, past masters and using my photography too as reference points to create something new, fresh, and ready to hang, wear or use. Dependant on which of the myriad of products you choose to purchase!jan9cjan9

I would love to hear from you if you  want  me to concentrate on a particular theme – you can have a hand in making your dream duvet or your best thought as a phone case! You can link to my page at Society 6 by navigating to the S6 on the menu or link here My S6 store – lots of stuff!

Floral tribute to RHS

daily living, illustration, photography, RHS, uk

Yesterday I made a further visit to RHS Hyde Hall in Essex, and it will probably be the last visit for some time as my life in the South of England is coming ever closer to a removal back to the Midlands. The two centre life I have lived over the past 14 years nevertheless remains a constant as I will be spending a great deal of time in Scotland. Hurrah!!

I hadn’t taken my working camera, so had to fall back on the companion phone camera simply because I had to capture the blooms I found there , and thought it might be interesting to show the photos and then the subsequent design that sprang from them. Sort of a Work in Progress thing.

So there you have it! If you want to see more of my work there are links on the home page of the blog. Lots of different styles , not just flowers!!!

I love how my life is still flowering in new directions – particularly as now we have the opportunity to spend more time in nature, and potter about in Scotland. Cannot wait to be back up there!!
