What He Said

Cempulappeyanirar (1st -3rd century AD)

Love.  It’s what I am about.  Some poet wrote this around 2000 years ago,  we don’t know his name.  Cempulappeyanirar is simply the way the poem is recorded, or attributed, (it simply means ‘the poet of  red earth and pouring rain).  It is taken from an anthology of Tamil poems. Tamil Nadu is the land of red soil,  and the metaphor of  how love mixes us up is simply very beautiful.  As is love.  I have made it my life’s work.  Like Raymond Carver, I am honoured by allowing myself to be ‘beloved on this earth.”  Like this poet, I will not be remembered for anything I have written,  only for having loved and for being loved.  I think that is enough.
